One of the key early priorities for the BASES’ Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Group (EDI AG) was to provide members with a greater awareness of the diversity within the membership. Our Role Models initiative for underrepresented members will look to do just that. Specifically, we are looking to increase the visibility of underrepresented groups within BASES, which we hope will also help raise the aspirations of underrepresented BASES members, and be an opportunity to connect and to network.
We are asking members to nominate Role Models who are Professional, Graduate or Student members of BASES and from underrepresented groups (women, people with disabilities, people from minoritised ethic groups within the UK , low-socioeconomic groups, and lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, non-conforming and others people).
We will look to promote our Role Models by recognising them on our dedicated Role Models webpage, through social media and through the Journal of Sports Sciences podcast.
If you know of a BASES member that has inspired or empowered you, someone who you feel deserves recognition for the work they do and the support they provide to people, please nominate them as a BASES Role Model via this form. Nominations are welcome each month, with a deadline of the 28th of each month.
Commenting on the Role Models initiative for underrepresented members, Dr Izzy Moore, member of the BASES EDI AG and Lead for this project, said, “We are aware through research that being able to see ‘people like me’ can help to increase the likelihood of success for underrepresented people in certain sectors and industries by providing realistic and relatable role models. The BASES EDI AG is working hard on a number of projects, the first of which to ‘go live’ is this new initiative, which aims to increase the visibility of our underrepresented BASES members, showcasing our diversity. I would like to thank members of the project team, Dr John Fernandes and Savannah Sturridge for their help in developing this initiative and to the wider members of the EDI AG for their scrutiny of the aims, objectives and outcomes. I do hope members will take the time to nominate inspirational members who could be included within the BASES’ Role Models’ Hall of Fame where an overview of those motivational members will be presented.”
