Aim of award

BASES Early Career Practitioner and Researcher Grants aim to assist early career practitioners and researchers to develop their applied and research potential. Applicants must have obtained either BASES Accreditation or a PhD or Professional Doctorate within the last 5 years (whichever came first).. Two grants up to a total of £2,000 each are available every year.

This award is intended to enable practice and research where the resources, equipment and infrastructure exists to support the intended activities. Therefore, applications for funds to support time, rather than resources, equipment and infrastructure will be considered more favourably. Applications should also make it clear that all other elements are in place to enable successful completion of the intended activities.

Grant criteria

• The applicant must be a Professional Member of BASES.
• The applicant must be within 5 years of obtaining either BASES accreditation, PhD or Professional Doctorate (whichever came first). BASES will consider making adjustments on a needs basis for individuals who have taken a career break within the first 5 years of their career; for example, for maternity leave or leave due to illness.
• The applicant has read and will comply with the Terms and Conditions of the BASES Early-Career Practitioner and Researcher Grants.
• The applicant must submit the BASES Early-Career Practitioner and Researcher Grant application form and a two page CV. Only information contained within the application form and the CV will be considered.
• Within four weeks of receiving the award letter, the recipients of a grant shall liaise with Dr Claire Hitchings (editor@bases.org.uk) to discuss the submission of an article (1,500 words max) for consideration in The Sport and Exercise Scientist. The article shall comply with ‘Guidelines for Contributors to The Sport and Exercise Scientist’. The emphasis of the article should be on contributing to the continuing professional development of sport and exercise scientists by promoting evidence-based practice. The award winner must agree the focus and format of the article with Dr Claire Hitchings prior to writing the article.

Each application is assessed against the following criteria:

• The extent to which the grant with enable the applicant’s personal career development;
• The projected impact of the proposed work and how the grant will enable this;
• The clarity of the applicant’s description of his/her career ambitions and how the grant application matches and enables these;
• The applicant’s contribution to BASES.
• The applicant has not submitted a BASES Early-Career Practitioner and Researcher Grant application within the past year.
• The applicant has not received a BASES Early-Career Practitioner and Researcher Grant within the past 3 years.
