The variety of current programmes offer degree level studies in key areas of sport related subjects for both joint and single honours students and include; the scientific study of sport and exercise; sport and exercise psychology and sport and leisure management. Each course provides students with the knowledge and methods to examine sport and related activities from a variety of theoretical perspectives. The department is associated with both national and international sport and exercise organisations such as the British association of sport and exercise sciences and is also a member of the European network of sport science institutes. The department is the centre for sport science support in Kent. its activities with elite athletes and coaches enable students to gain first hand experience of the practical application of sport and exercise science. There is a fully accredited physiology laboratory and biomechanics study centre. the programmes are of contemporary relevance which reflect; the increasingly scientific approach to sport performance; the growth of sport and exercise psychology; the expansion in leisure opportunities; a growing awareness of the economic, political and social importance of sport at national and international levels and of the links between exercise and health. In February 2001 the quality assurance agency awarded sport science 21 points out of a possible 24 (an overall rating of excellence"). This highlights the quality of the programmes on offer at the college. The RAE score of a 3b recognised the valuable contribution which the department places on research."
