BUES- BASES Undergraduate Endorsement Scheme

The BASES Undergraduate Endorsement Scheme (BUES) awards endorsement to sport and exercise science degree courses that provide undergraduates with the opportunity to develop the knowledge and skills essential to enter into the profession. BASES is a professional membership association that has endorsed sport and exercise science undergraduate courses since the scheme was launched in 2005. BUES is now the recognised standard for all sport and exercise science undergraduate degree programmes in the UK*.BASES endorsement is awarded to courses that meet criteria covering the necessary foundation of sport and exercise science knowledge, technical skills and professional development competencies required to succeed in the profession. When reviewing a course, BASES considers the curriculum, the practical experience gained by students and the resources and facilities of the institution.

During the five-year period of endorsement, all endorsed degrees will be:

• Listed on the BASES Endorsed Course directory and Course Finder directory on the BASES website
• Listed in the BASES Careers Guide (printed and online editions)
• Listing in the BASES quarterly publication, The Sport and Exercise Scientist and BASES monthly newsletter (following endorsement/re-endorsement)
• Permission to promote degree programmes as 'BASES endorsed' including use of the BASES Endorsed Undergraduate Course logo.

Institutions with a BUES endorsed degree will also benefit from the following:

• Free printed copies of the BASES Careers Guide
• Exclusive discounts: 20% off advertising a course in BASES quarterly publication, The Sport and Exercise Scientist, and 25% off job vacancy listings
• Preferential bulk membership rates for students and staff.

Lab accreditation

The BASES Laboratory Accreditation provides a mark of quality assurance to clients, research funders and the wider community that illustrates the laboratory has undergone meticulous inspection by BASES and that high professional standards of practice have been achieved. Laboratories that are accredited by BASES will have demonstrated:

• that instruments in their laboratory are well maintained in terms of reliability, validity and routine servicing
• that staff have the appropriate professional and vocational qualifications
• that the requisite operational documents governing operating procedures and health and safety are met
• operational competence in the delivery of physiological assessment, data interpretation and communication
• full consideration for client’s welfare, confidentiality and safety
• a suitably fit and safe environment for the high standards of practice expected of a BASES Accredited Sport and Exercise Scientist.

Bulk Membership

BASES offers reduced membership rates to institutions looking to purchase bulk membership for their lecturers and students. For more information on bulk membership please click here.

Accreditation partnership scheme

A number of high-performance sports organisations such as Newcastle United FC, Leicester City Football Club, the UK Sports Institute (Previously EIS) and sportscotland Institute of Sport have applied for and have been approved for the BASES accreditation partnership scheme which allows their practitioners to apply for BASES accreditation via a streamlined, less time-consuming process. This scheme is also appropriate and open to all suitable organisations including Higher Education Institutes who are looking to get their staff accredited and may also help in working towards satisfying the criteria for BUES and Lab accreditation. 

Education and Teaching Special Interest Group (SIG)

The overarching aim of the SIG is to promote excellence in teaching and learning within and across our disciplines of sport and exercise science. The proposed purpose of this SIG is to:

• Set standards for excellence in teaching and learning in sport and exercise science education;
• Promote the use of evidence-informed sport and exercise science education
• Identify improvements in traditional approaches and support innovation in curriculum planning, teaching and learning, assessment and educational management
• Recognise the global nature of teaching and learning in sport and exercise science education
• Influence the continued development of sport and exercise science education through collaboration with relevant national, regional and international bodies
• Recognise and utilise associated activity/research in related medicine and healthcare professions.

The Special interest group has delivered a number of webinars and contributed to the Heads of Department forum.

BASES CPD Endorsement

If you are running a short course, workshop or CPD event that you feel may be of interest to the sport and exercise science community and would like to benefit from an endorsement from the leading professional body in sport and exercise sciences, then you can apply for BASES CPD endorsement. In addition to an endorsement, BASES will also help promote and market your event - and can administer event bookings as well. What are the benefits of BASES CPD endorsement?

• It is recognised as meeting required criteria for the award of BASES Continued Professional Development (CPD) credits.
• Listing in BASES monthly e-newsletter circulated to BASES 2,500 members.
• Listing in BASES quarterly publication The Sport and Exercise Scientist (subject to publication dates).
• Promotion via BASES social media channels to reach a large target audience (31.3k following on Twitter, over 5.6k followers on Facebook, over 6.6k followers on LinkedIn and over 1.9k followers on Instagram).
• Events advertised with an Endorsed CPD Event logo on BASES website and newsletter. The BASES Endorsed CPD Event logo can also be used by event organisers on their own promotional material
• Endorsed courses receive a 15% discount towards advertising in The Sport and Exercise Scientist

For example, an MoU with UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) includes elements that ensure BASES shares regular news articles provided by UKAD via our channels and conversely UKAD shares and promotes relevant CPD and news articles.

Sport and Performance Division

The BASES Sport and Performance Division specialises in the performance aspects of physiology, biomechanics and psychology and therefore attracts a wide variety of members and discussion topics. Recent Division days and workshops have included fatigue science and elite team sport practical applications. The Sport and Performance Division aims to support applied coaches and practitioners, sports scientists and researchers. Much of what we discuss brings performance science from the lab to live sporting environments. If you are a BASES member, check out the Sport and Performance Division Hub in the Members' Area, where you can access a range of resources including videos and presentations from the BASES Conference and Division events. 

CPD collaboration

We have worked with organisations such as the British Psychological Society to produce a series of collaborative workshops that allowed members of both organisations to benefit from high quality CPD at a lower cost. BASES has also collaborated with the English Premier League to provide some sports specific CPD within Division events and webinars. 

Professional development support - CPD, research TSES, Journals

The Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP) and BASES have agreed to provide reciprocal access to each organisation’s publications. This partnership is for the purposes of enhancing the activities of both BASES and AASP and fostering co-operation in an international context, for the benefits of professionals involved with the respective organisations.

The MoU between the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES) and Exercise & Sports Science Australia (ESSA) outlines the defined agreed collaborative relationship for purposes that enhance the activities of each organisation and foster co-operation in an international context for the benefit of all professions and professionals involved within the respective organisations. This includes reciprocal membership rates for events and CPD and promotion of CPD and news articles.
